History of the Chicago Bears

As a charter-member of the National Football League, the Chicago Bears have one of the most dynamic histories in professional sports.  In their 90 seasons, they have amassed the most regular season wins (693) and combined regular season and postseason wins (709). They also lead the NFL in Hall of Famers (30) and retired uniform numbers (13).

The Bears can trace their origins to 1919 when the A.E. Staley food starch company of Decatur, Illinois, established a company team named the Decatur Staleys.  George Halas and Edward “Dutch” Sternaman were hired in 1920 to run the league and Halas subsequently moved the team to the NFL.

In 1921, they moved to Chicago.  They continued to be known as the Staleys until Halas purchased them from A.E. Staley for 0.  From the time of Halas’s purchase until today, they have been known as the Bears.

The Chicago Bears were dominant in their early years.  They won the league

Arrington, Not T.O., Could Be Biggest Offseason Addition by an NFC Contender

It’s tough to top Terrell Owens in anything. On the field, off the field, in front of the cameras, in front of a microphone, you name it.  T.O. demands attention, and, because everybody seems to love a juicy NFL controversy in this age, he usually gets it.

The fact that Bill Parcells, Jerry Jones and the demonstrative Dallas Cowboys were brave enough to acquire Owens this offseason only adds to his allure. America’s Team and one of the most arrogant yet dominant athletes in recent memory seem to be a perfect fit – at least until all of the Texas-sized egos take over in Big D.

But while some analysts and bettors are busy this summer pondering whether or not Owens can return the Cowboys to the franchise’s glory days, perhaps the most important acquisition in the NFC East is floating along unnoticed.

“It was clear to us,” Giants general manager Ernie Accorsi said, “that we needed an impact player on defense. LaVar Arrington is

NFL Power Rankings – Week 10

NFL Power Rankings – Week 10

Surprise, surprise — the Saints and Colts are in the top two spots in this week’s NFL Power Rankings. New Orleans and Indianapolis both improved to 8-0 and stay at their respective spots for the sixth week in a row.

The Steelers jump two spots to No. 3, ahead of the Vikings, who have a better record and were on a bye this week. The Broncos fall two spots to No.6 after their second loss in a row on Monday night. Denver now is looking up at the Patriots. Let the controversy and angry comments begin!

A steady decline for the Packers has been the pattern over the past couple of weeks. Green Bay now falls to No.20 after an embarrassing loss to the previously winless Buccaneers.

The Browns didn’t play in Week 9, nonetheless, they fall to the No. 32 spot after Tampa’s victory. I think we all know if the Browns were playing this week they would’ve lost. Browns fans probably thought they had a week off from misery, but not even a week off can

The Rain Maker Sports: Sports Bytes – June 18, 2010

According to Fightnews.com, 7 ft Russian giant Nikolay Valuev has been offered .5 million to challenge WBC Heavyweight Champion Vitali Klitschko. Valuev refuses to fight for less than .5 million. I can’t blame Valuev for holding out. If I were a below average fighter whose only advantage was my size and I were going to be punished by Klitschko, I’d want a bigger payday too. Unfortunately for Valuev he doesn’t have much negotiating leverage with Klitschko’s promoter K2 since he looked so disappointing in his last two bouts. In Dec 2008 he was given a gift decision over Evander Holyfield, and in Nov 2009 he lost to David Haye. My advice to Valuev is take the .5 million and run before K2 changes its mind . . .

The Ubaldo Jimenez express continues to roll through major league baseball. Yesterday afternoon Jimenez won his 13th game after surrendering only one run in eight innings to lead the Rockies to a 5-1 victory over the Twins. With the

The Rain Maker Sports: Sports Bytes – June 1, 2010

Raise your hand if you were surprised that Vitali Klitschko stopped Albert Sosnowski on Saturday in Germany. Now raise your hand if you knew who Sosnowski was prior to the fight . . .

I don’t know about you, but I’m relieved to hear that Randy Moss is not retiring. The rumor nearly destroyed my Memorial Day Weekend . . . Moss is apparently looking for a new agent to increase his off-the-gridiron marketability. Somehow I can’t picture Moss smiling his way through an erectile-dysfunction commercial . . .

I’m guessing that Memorial Day is now one of Alex Rodriguez’s favorite holidays. Yesterday he hit a grand slam and drove in a total of six runs in the Yanks 11-2 rout of the Indians . . . Even with an 8-1 lead Chan Ho-Park was still incapable of pitching a scoreless outing. He threw two innings yesterday and gave up two hits and a run . . . I guess Joe Girardi felt that an 8-1 lead wasn’t a big enough margin to trust Joba Chamberlain. . .

The Legacy Of The Detroit Lions

The Legacy Of The Detroit Lions

Love ‘em or hate ‘em, the Detroit Lions are the city’s only professional football franchise. The team currently resides just a luxury sedan or limo ride away at Ford Field, located in downtown Detroit. Here are some team historical highlights:

The Lions weren’t Detroit’s first pro football team. In 1920, the Detroit Heralds were a charter member of the American Professional Football Association, but the franchise folded after two years. Then the Detroit Panthers formed in 1925, but that team also folded after two seasons. In 1928, the Detroit Wolverines were formed, but they failed after only one year. Finally, Detroit welcomed the Lions in 1934. The team originated in Ohio and was purchased for ,952.08 by a group headed by Detroit radio executive George A. Richards and then moved to Motown.

The Lions played in the University of Detroit Stadium before average crowds of 16,000 people. The new Detroit Lions won the NFL Championship

Is Pacman Jones A Victim Or Another Spoiled Athlete?

Is Pacman Jones A Victim Or Another Spoiled Athlete?

Just when critics of professional athletes had all of them, such as Pacman Jones, stereotyped as thugs and hoodlums, police in Las Vegas and Seattle dropped a bombshell on haters of the future Dallas Cowboys cornerback.

According to the Associated Press, Adam “Pacman” Jones paid extortion money to Arvin Kenti Edwards, 29, of Renton, Wash. who allegedly opened fire at a strip club and paralyzed an employee during NBA All-Star Weekend on February 19, 2007 in Las Vegas.

Las Vegas police said the two briefly met outside the club after Jones incited a melee. Shortly after the two parted ways, the alleged gunman fired shots towards the club.

According to the police, someone contacted Jones about a week later and ordered him to pay “hush money” or the alleged perpetrator would “go after Jones, his mother and daughter.”

”Jones pleaded no contest Dec. 6 in Las Vegas to conspiracy to commit disorderly conduct in a

The Rain Maker Sports: Sports Bytes – May 7, 2010

It just doesn’t end. It doesn’t matter the sport, the color of the player, or even the player’s age. With each sunrise it seems there is another professional athlete accused of committing a crime, usually a violent one. The latest accusation is leveled against perhaps the greatest defensive player in NFL history: Lawrence Taylor. The 51-year-old legend is accused of beating and raping a 16-year-old girl in Rockland County, NY. Although Taylor’s arrest does not guarantee his guilt, the accusation is sickening nonetheless. I have reached the point where I gently discourage my young son from admiring any athletes. Otherwise, what will I say to the boy when he sees his idol doing the perp walk on the evening news? . . .

Don’t miss the Paul Williams-Kermit Cintron jr. middleweight bout Saturday on HBO’s “World Championship Boxing” series. It should be worth the time investment. Paul Williams is incapable of being in a bad fight, and on Saturday he’ll be
